Travel Light

Jesus was sending the disciples out two by two on their first missionary journey. His instructions were clear…  “Take nothing for your journey. Don’t take a walking stick, a traveler’s bag, food, money, or even a change of clothes” (Luke 9:3).

Why were they instructed to travel so light? Because His all sufficiency was being taught to them. How else would they learn that He is able to meet all their detailed needs unless they learned it through personal experience.

Have we become so self-sufficient that we no longer recognize that God is “able to meet all our needs according to His riches in Christ Jesus?” Christians carry horrible stress about the future - their retirement fund is dwindling fast, or gone completely, their taxes keep climbing but their income doesn’t; the car is old… health insurance is expensive… etc….

Where in our lives do we come to a place of complete surrender to God and His ability to care for us? These days are drawing God’s people to Him, not just as Redeemer and Savior, but Provider and Sustainer - our “ever-present help in time of need.”

May we all purpose to travel light as we head Home. What we need, and what the world says we need, are two different things. If we are going to pack our closets full of something, let it be prayer. If we are seeking the warmth of feeling secure in an insecure world, let it be because we have “hidden ourselves in Christ.”

He is able.
