“Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD which exercises lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD” (Jeremiah 9:23-24).
God gave this warning to Jeremiah to share in his day, which was the last generation before Judgment, just as ours is. It was a warning against false confidences that cannot save in the day of wrath. Only a personal relationship with God, offered to us through Jesus Christ His Son, provides safety in that Day.
It delights God’s heart when people understand and know Him – that His lovingkindness was extended to every person in the world through the Cross; His justice against our sins was satisfied as Jesus paid our debt in His blood; and His own righteousness is gifted to all who repent and believe, not only in a legal acquittal of justification, but applied to each heart in transforming power by His Holy Spirit.
Is it any wonder that God spoke from Heaven three times saying, “This is My Beloved Son in whom is all My delight! Listen to Him!” The hour is late for our world, just as it was for Jeremiah’s. But it delights God’s heart to seek and save the lost, to rescue and redeem sinners, even to the last second, through the Gift of His Son.
Oh, if only our world understood that God’s warnings are always given in love, with a Lifeline to Himself.
