Waiting At The Gate

In Bible times, when the Master of the house was away on a trip, the servants were never quite sure of his exact time of return. Jesus taught about His return in light of this parable.

“Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning and be like men who are waiting for their Master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to Him at once when He comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the Master finds awake when He comes... You also must be ready for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Luke 12:35-40).

But Jesus continued His parable, explaining that not everyone was watchful, some got tired of waiting, and became careless with their responsibilities. They quit watching for Him; their lamps were no longer lit. They ate, drank, and got drunk. Life was now only about living for the momentary pleasures, devoid of commitments and responsibilities they had once thought valuable.

Dear friends, may we be careful to not get weary in waiting, but awake and watchful! Let’s not just have our lamps lit, but let’s be the ones outside at the gate looking. He has reserved a special reward for those that are watching. Stay alert! I'm sure I can hear Him coming.
