The Power Of Reason

“Come now, and let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool” (Isaiah 1:18).

Our God is a God of reason. He desires to win the sinner with truth and reality, so they can see God’s ways and His righteousness are best. The true God doesn’t use or condone violence. King David wrote… “Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your Law; yes, I shall observe it with my whole heart” (Psalm 11(:34).

Jesus brought understanding to His disciples so they could “reason” of “sin, righteousness, and coming judgment” to unbelievers. This is why Charlie was killed: he could articulate his arguments for righteousness and make them sensible, showing the sinful lifestyles to be both wrong and hurtful, to individuals and society, while showing the excellency of God’s design in family and country.

Why did Cain kill Abel? “Because his own works were evil and his brother’s righteous.” It was to silence the very one whose life and voice was a conviction. Cain was beyond reason and God judged him.

Every Believer is called to share the Good News of Christ: forgiveness through the Cross, the Gift of righteousness, and exemption from coming judgment. It’s to reason with the unbeliever. The word “reason” is from the Greek “dialogue” meaning to discuss and debate thoroughly.

John the Baptist’s ministry was to “turn the disobedient to the wisdom of righteousness, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” May we continue to do the same. Because when truth is called hate, and reason is silenced, our world is ripe for wrath. But may we do it in the “sweet reasonableness” of Jesus, whose Spirit indwells all who love Him, as Charlie so beautifully demonstrated.
