Caveat Emptor

Caveat Emptor is Latin for “Let the buyer beware.” It’s a warning that the onus is on the buyer to make sure the purchase is good. This is not only a business law but also a good spiritual law.

People buy into many things without money. The Lord says, “Buy the truth and sell it not,” because people need to know what the consequences are for siding with evil. We use the terms like, “They bought the lie,” when someone is gullible, or “I don’t buy that!” when we hear a claim we don’t believe.

God has warned the wicked… “The ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and He weighs all their goings. His own lawlessness shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be held with the ropes of his own sins…” (Proverbs 5:21,22). As we watch people side with evil for a paycheck, political alliances, or the glee of malice, we’re watching people buy into that which will ensnare and destroy their own souls.

What a difference when God calls sinners, “Come, let us reason together, says the Lord. Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow…” (Isaiah 1:18). The Cross of Christ is where God’s love meets human sinfulness. And when we put our faith in Christ, we are acknowledging we believe His testimony it true - there is both a Judgment Day and eternal condemnation for those who side with wickedness.

Yet God has offered forgiveness of sins, a new nature of righteousness, and exemption from coming wrath to everyone who will repent and place their faith in Christ’s payment on the Cross. His resurrection is proof He is returning to judge the world in righteousness.

The hour is late, but the invitation of the Cross still calls… “Buy the Truth and sell it not.”
