So many people are setting goals to meet their soon-to-be New Year’s resolutions, but as Believers we would be wise to recognize that God also has goals for us, a deeper work than outward goals, but a new and transformational growth in our lives; a refining of who we are as His children.

The process of sanctification is often overlooked… “I’m saved, so I’m good,” is often the thought process. But being saved is just the beginning of our spiritual walk that is meant to conform us, more and more, into His likeness.

It’s often the “little things” that we think are unimportant, but to God they’re greatly important. How about our speech? Do we use the Lord’s name in vain even though He said not to? (Exodus20:7). Do we curse even though He said to not let any bad language leave our mouth? (Ephesians 4:29). Do we mostly focus on the negative rather than what is good and lovely? (Philippians 4:8,9). We need to let God refine us; fine-tune us, so that we can be growing in grace, and be more like Him.

Moses struggled with controlling his anger. Naomi struggled with the bitterness of unrelenting grief. The Lord referred to the brothers, James and John, as sons of thunder, because they hadn’t learned to control their outbursts. Maybe we, too, need self control, but in a different way. The truth is that we all know where we need to grow. Perhaps we need to grow in our faith, over doubts. Maybe we need to conquer a fear that has controlled us. Heaven knows, we all need to grow in love.

Friends, we all need fine-tuning, that’s a fact! Like an instrument that’s out of tune, our lives can lack a beautiful melody in that area, if left unchecked. May we make 2026 the year we ask God to grow us more into His likeness, molding and making us instruments used for His glory.

Are we open to change? We must be willing to be disciplined if we are going to be His disciples - there’s no other way. It’s not comfortable, or easy, but it’s the most important goal we can strive for.
